The story

For forty years, the Thartans have been absent from Mordikhaan — defeated in a war no one fully remembers, retreated into the mountains, transformed by the survivors into proof that the world can be saved. Forty years of uneasy peace, built on top of a catastrophe people prefer not to examine too closely.

The Lord High Steward, Santaris Sendus, is dying — or would be, if the Queen’s mark on his chest would let him. Bound to life by an ancient command from a ruler who vanished decades ago, he rots slowly in the fortress of the Crag, kept breathing by a magic he cannot escape. His physician, Lycellis, is searching for a way to release him — and has broken into a sealed library of secrets to do it.

In the west, the young lord Elderne Karos is handed a barbed black ring by a stranger who calls himself the Benefactor, and told that if he carries it to the Thartans, he will command an army. He carries it to the border. The Thartans return — and Elderne’s mercenary guard, a seven-foot half-giant called Khe, is the only one they don’t take.

They say “wrong blood” and let her go.

What follows is a war no one prepared for, a politics no one controls, and a mystery at the centre of everything: what does the Benefactor want with the missing Queen?
